Aylesbury Knights 18   Medway Dragons 46

The Knights christened their new kit with a fixture against the highly organised Dragons on a fine but blustery day, which made kicking and handling, especially long passing, something of a lottery. The Dragons opening kick-off was blown out on the full gifting the Knights with the first real opportunity, duly taken with some fine forward charges leading to Mitch Cann plunging over from acting half. The rest of the half was a story of missed chances for the Knights, with Medway taking their chances for a 16-4 halftime advantage. Scoring first was paramount in the 2nd half, but lapses in concentration and handling errors cost Knights dearly as Medway raced 36-4 ahead.  A plea for effort and pride led to James Woodfall racing through from 30 yards finishing off a classic flowing attack direct from a scrum. Again the Dragons seized on errors, due to Knights trying again to force the ball wide, to score 2 further tries to emphasize their clinical approach, before Andy Berry, now operating in the centre, atoned for some earlier errors by scoring two fine late tries to put some respectability back on the score sheet. The final score didn’t really reflect the effort put in by the Knights in a battle of 2 well matched sides, but it did show the importance of not coughing up possession early in the tackle count in your own half, gifting chances to the opposition.
