The
Knights V The Centurions
Aylesbury
Knight’s first game of the season took place on Saturday morning at St Albans
Centurions’ ground, in Colney Heath. The under 16s team boasted a nucleus of
players who had played rugby league before, but for the majority this was their
first venture into the world of scoot, hit up and ‘play the ball’.
The
Centurions started the game more brightly with the knights defensive line not
too sure of their positioning. Gradually with strong and powerful work by the
props Grimley and MacLeod they started to gain important yards for Aylesbury and
with excellent distribution from dummy half, hooker Esson, the team began to
gain confidence. At half time and 12-14 up the team were justifiably upbeat with
McGarvey, Jones and Hayes gradually making more territory as their confidence
seemed to grow.
Half
time, though welcome it was, caused a diversion as St Albans scored three tries
after the restart taking the score to 28-14. Aylesbury were now up against it.
Enter the knights in shining armour, Grimley, Esson and Jones again, who
respectively , rammed, tackled and probed Buckinghamshires only Rugby League
team back into the game, eventually drawing 28 -28.
